EA Enlightenment October 2025

This past month has been full! Our last Friday teacher work day had a different focus than many of our more standard work days. A normal work day is focused on full school or level specific training, then there is level and classroom time after. We have covered many topics, including behavioral management, special education strategies for the individual and whole group, Kagan strategies of grouping students by heterogeneous and homogenous metrics, literacy and numeracy support, and many others.
September’s teacher work day had a focus on teams and community. We took the staff up to Camp Oakley, which is a therapeutic recreation center in Oakley, Utah, and spent the day focused on interpersonal relationship skills and roles within each team. We stepped away from the classroom and the daily routines to focus on a wider perspective. We are a community. We are a group of people who have come together for a variety of reasons, but the ultimate reason is for the good of the child.
We stepped away so that each member of our staff could see their own role within our community. Our success as a school is determined by our ability to all work together with our families in order to support and cherish the students. We want all of us, and all of our families as well,to think of relationships and how we can support each other.
Our challenge this month to all of you is to look at where you can find more connection within our community. Call a new parent and get some coffee, set up a play date, check in on a teacher or your child’s classroom, write a note, ask a question, support the EAPO, or attend one of our monthly Campus Conversations events. We are excited that as an entire school community, we are committing to this task of finding community connection together.

Mission in Motion

Mission in Motion: The Art and Science of Belonging
At Elizabeth Academy, belonging is both an art and a science. It is the art of kindness, creativity, and empathy that shapes our daily interactions, and it is the science of human development that reminds us how essential connection is for learning and growth. This year, our theme—The Art and Science of Belonging—guides us as we create environments where every child feels valued, seen, and supported.
We are drawing inspiration from classic literature, including Winnie the Pooh, The Trumpet of the Swan, and The Wind in the Willows. These stories remind us that friendship comes in many forms: from Pooh’s simple joy in companionship, to Louis the swan’s courageous journey to find his voice, to Mole and Rat’s adventures of hospitality and trust. Together, these texts give our students opportunities to reflect on what it means to belong to a community that accepts differences and celebrates strengths.
Just as ecosystems thrive through interdependence, so too do our classrooms. The science of belonging shows us that strong relationships reduce stress, build resilience, and create the conditions for academic and social growth. Through the lens of Universal Design for Learning, our teachers are designing lessons that provide multiple ways for students to engage, express, and connect. The art of belonging shows up in a circle of friends reading together, a student supporting a peer, or a class mural illustrating the beauty of nature and community.
Families are a vital part of this journey. We invite you to reflect on the ways belonging takes root at home—whether through shared meals, family traditions, or everyday acts of kindness—and to share those with our community. By weaving together the experiences of students, teachers, and families, we strengthen the fabric of our school and model for our children what it means to be part of something larger than ourselves.
As we move through this year, may we all embrace the art and science of belonging: cultivating relationships that are as joyful as a day in the Hundred Acre Wood, as courageous as a swan’s first song, and as lasting as a friendship along the riverbank. Together, we are building a community where everyone belongs.

Inclusive Montessori
Integrated Services– A Strong Start to the School Year
In Montessori education, the beginning of each year is a time of “normalization,” when children find their rhythm, settle into routines, and reconnect with the joy of purposeful work. Our Integrated Services Team plays an important role in this process, supporting students as they transition back into the prepared environment and ensuring that every child can begin the year with confidence. Observation is at the heart of Montessori practice, and it is also the foundation of our therapeutic work. At the start of the year, therapists focus on observing students and reassessing skills so we can understand exactly where each child is after the summer and how best to meet their needs. When students continue with the same therapist, services often begin right away. When new therapists join, they take time to observe and collect data before introducing or adjusting strategies, ensuring that every child’s support is individualized and responsive.
Integrated Services means that therapy is not separate from classroom life—it is seamlessly woven into each child’s day. This could look like a student practicing speech goals during a group lesson, or a motor skill being strengthened in a practical life activity. In this way, strategies are part of the daily classroom experience, supporting children in real time as they learn and grow.
The Clinical Council Team is at the center of this work. This is a group of highly skilled professionals that meets weekly to share observations, review student needs, and refine learning plans. In true Montessori spirit, the Clinical Council ensures that each child’s School Support Plan (SSP) is a living document—designed to evolve as the child develops independence and confidence. Mornings often focus on observations and assessments, while afternoons are dedicated to collaborative planning with teachers to make sure strategies are integrated smoothly into classroom practice.
We are encouraged by the thoughtful, structured conversations taking place in the Clinical Council, and by the way these conversations translate directly into classroom life. Each week brings greater clarity and consistency, strengthening the foundation for a successful school year.
Our commitment is to deeply understand every child, to integrate support with fidelity and care, and to partner with families in creating an inclusive Montessori environment where all students thrive. With a strong beginning and shared dedication, we are excited for the growth, joy, and discoveries this year will bring.
