The Elementary I classroom provides all the requirements in the standard curriculum for the State of Utah for children in grades 1 through 3 and supplements them with so much more!  Our low student to teacher ratio allows for this individualized instruction.  The 3-year program allows the children to focus upon and grasp more abstract academic concepts and to master skills as they continue to explore their world outside of themselves and their peers.  A vast amount of materials and opportunities are provided so that there is no limit to academic, social, emotional and spiritual development.  Peace education and problem solving allow the children to become skilled in social situations as they also develop critical thinking.  The curriculum incorporates skills mastered from Early Childhood’s Practical Life and Sensorial sections and integrates them into the following 3 main subject areas:

LANGUAGE

Language is an important component in the Elementary curriculum.  In this fully integrated curriculum, the student practices reading and writing skills through research in history, geography, botany, zoology, social studies and science.  Spelling, grammar, punctuation, word study and reference skills are introduced.  “Key Experience” lessons are given so that the child can relate to grammar, punctuation, etc. in such a way as to assist in mentally mastering such things as parts of speech, reading, and writing skills.

MATHEMATICS

The student still uses manipulative materials to learn and comprehend mathematical operations, but now progresses to working with fractions, decimals, geometry and algebra.  As the child continues, and realizes that the abstract concepts are being understood and mastered without the use of manipulatives, the materials are naturally discarded.  As mastery, independence and self discipline occur, a natural confidence is born fueling a desire to learn ever more challenging concepts and applications.

CULTURAL STUDIES

Fully integrated to reflect the interconnection of life, the Cultural Studies curriculum includes geography, history, science, anthropology, geology, music, art, peace education, and other related subjects.  Art is integrated into the curriculum in such activities as geometric drawings, map skills, botany and zoology, nomenclature and architecture.  Music and movement is integrated into the curriculum through the study of history and different cultures.  Science, music, art and dance are reinforced with the help of specialists in our Enrichment programs such as Mad Science, Tanner Dance, Artworks for Kids and other specialists.  Our Cultural Fair at the end of the school year incorporates all subjects and depends on contributions from students, teachers, parents and staff.
